How to set minimal quantity for defined category required to place an order?

I'm not sure if the Min Product Quantity module will do what I need - please advise if it will or some other module? I have many postcards with separate product pages for each, all in the same category. I would like the customer to choose any one, but not allowed to buy unless another three or more are added from the same category. Might be more than one of the same, or all four different, or six or more. I think the module does this - I just need to check.

in your case "cart conditions pro" will work as you wish since "minimal product quantity" module is dedicated to control minimal quantity of exact product and/or its combinations.
with cart condtitions pro module you can create cart condition like:
- customer must add to cart at least X products from selected category
 
so you can set it like i show on the screenshot below:

In context of your expectactions and in context of example above - front office it works like this:

• module checks if cart has X products from defined category (module checks quantities of products and / or combinations of these products)
• if so: customer can go through checkout
• if not: customer can't go through checkout and module spawns information about why it is not possible to place an order
